From May 5-6, Armenia's Ambassador to Russia Vardan Toghanyan took part in the events in the Astrakhan region dedicated to the 300th anniversary of founding of the Russian and Novo-Nakhichevan Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

During his visit, Ambassador Vardan Toganyan held a meeting with Alexander Zhilkin, Governor of the Astrakhan region. The meeting was attended by Head of the Russian and Novo-Nakhichevan Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church Archbishop Yezras Nersisyan, Consul General of the Republic of Armenia to the Southern Federal District Vardan Asoyan, Priest of St. Hripsime Church Marcos Sargsyan, and representatives of the Armenian community. With the participation of Vardan Toghanyan and Alexander Zhilkin was held the opening ceremony of two khachkars.

Newly consecrated khachkars were erected on the same place where the first Armenian stone church of the Dormition of the Mother of God was built based on the especial decree of Peter the Great in 1706.

In the past, there were 5 Armenian churches in Astrakhan, which eventually ceased to function. Today, in the center of the city there is the Church of St. Hripsime.
